BIO

Alina Karmadanova is a painter born in Siberia (Russia). She holds a Bachelor's degree in Architecture and Design. From 2018-2023, she was residing and creating in Shanghai, China. From 2022-2024 Alina was studying at Falmouth University (UK) and getting her Master degree in Illustration online. From 2023-2024 she was studying advanced studio practice in Canada, New Brunswick at NBCCD craft and design college. This program helped Alina to focus on building successful career as an art practitioner and integrate in Canadian art community.

Artist statement

Alina's art centers around exploring the position of women in contemporary society, and how modern-day norms, social media, and technology intersect with the human psyche and emotions.

Through her art, she aims to unpack these intricacies by creating a safe space for dialogue and introspection. Her personal journey of healing from trauma and identity crisis and researching the impact of social media on individuals led her to become a contemporary artist.

She prefers working with acrylic paint on canvas, which allows for spontaneity, experimentation, and subconscious automatic exploration of color and line as well as using graphic color blocks.

As a survivor of domestic violence and antiwar artist, Alina donates a significant part of the profit to Women’s organizations (including Ukrainian organizations).

More about the artist

Through her artistic expressions, Alina establishes a platform for discourse on domestic violence and its wide-ranging impact on society.

She initially delved into themes of corporeality, self-harm, and body aversion as consequences of physical and sexual violence. Simultaneously, while working on this series, the artist transitioned to examining the shifts in attitudes towards the body and women resulting from emerging technologies, which finds resonance in her works about sex-work and objectivisation. Immersed in the online space, the artist encounters the stories of other women who have experienced the aftermath of violence, documenting and revealing their life narratives through a series of compelling paintings.

Ultimately, the theme of violence unfolds within a global context in her military series. Alina perceives the violence against women as a root cause of military aggression. At the moment Alina works on the series of paintings and illustrations reflecting on national identity crisis and fascist/authoritarian regimes and its imperialistic impact on society as well as its connection with patriarchy.

Body Passion
This series symbolises an important stage in the life of every woman. Feeling seen, but also accepting one's body and cultivating love for it. Healing after self-harm and body aversion this series opposed and fought old habits. Look at the paintings from this series and remind yourself of the normality of your body, and that you deserve to be happy no matter what shape you are in now.
Social media
Researching the ways of creating images I dived into methodologies and Gillian’s Rose phase (“the connection between seeing and true knowing was broken”) struck me as a lightning. This concept is especially crucial when thinking about our modern, internet and social media driven, life. A space where we present ourselves and our life for the public to see, sometimes drastically different from reality. Inspired by this division of the physical object and its online perception artists start reflecting on social media, self - perception and mental health.
Domestic violence
This series describes various stories of women who were killed or abused by their partners
Anti-war
In this series artist illustrate and document her point of view on Russian invasion in Ukraine. She concentrates on imperialism, oppression of opposition of putin's regime, propaganda and its connection with patriarchy.
I am glad to collaborate and be a part of any project connected with my scoop of interest. Even if it doesn't reach out anyway.
